Type 17: Two Erotes with Torches

A coin from Aphrodisias in Caria, with reverse type of two Erotes standing face to face, each holding a torch, and a garlanded altar in the exergue. Imhoof-Blumer (Zur griechischen und römischen Münzkunde, pp.82-83) sees these figures as Eros and Anteros rather than as Erotes, and speculates that the single Eros figures on Aphrodisian coins may also represent either, depending on which way they are facing.

* Aphrodisias in Caria, coins of Julia Domna (not illustrated) naming the magistrate Ti. Cl. Zenon.
